Crystal Receives Life-Changing Support
Care Coordination leads to empowerment and independence.
Just before the COVID-19 pandemic arrived, Care Coordinator Faith Metzger began working with Crystal Owens. She was experiencing a time of transition in which she was looking for new housing and support staff.
During this chaotic season, Faith helped Crystal move into an apartment through People Inc. She also set Crystal up for Self-Directed Services, which gave her more control over her finances, program choices, and staff selection.
“Faith is really good at her job,” says Crystal. “She’s fun, she’s smart. She’s a warm, kind-hearted person who gets things done.”
This year, Faith has been a critical source of support for Crystal as she navigates serious medical concerns. Crystal has hydrocephalus, a condition that can be life-threatening. She experiences severe headaches and sleep issues. Due to her diagnosis, sleep is critical for her health and survival.
“I want people to understand this is a real issue,” says Crystal.
Recently, Faith connected Crystal to a neurosurgeon after months of searching for someone who specialized in Crystal’s condition. This has given Crystal a new lease on life as it has been a long, difficult process to find resources for her unique medical needs.
“Faith is the best Care Coordinator I have had all these years,” says Crystal. “If not for her, I might not be here today.”
Faith, who has also mentored other Care Coordinators, remains dedicated to making sure Crystal is able to find the staffing, funding, and medical support she needs to thrive.
“Crystal’s had a long road,” says Faith. “I appreciate her ability to advocate for herself. She has a good sense of humor and she’s just an awesome person to work with!”
Each day, Care Coordinators like Faith are committed to empowering people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, connecting them to the care, support, and opportunities that maximize their quality of life.
