Race Eberhardt was born to be a star. Since the age of 10, he loved performing on stage in plays and musicals, though he always had an eye toward the big screen.

“This is part of who I am,” said the 37-year-old of his long-time interest in acting.

For years, Race has been involved in productions through Artists Unlimited in Rochester, NY. During a performance in 2019’s Shrek the Musical, his charisma caught the eye of Ben Gonyo. The local filmmaker instantly recognized Race’s star potential.

Inspired, Gonyo crafted a screenplay with Race in mind. The actor was thrilled to take on the perfect role, tailored just for him!

In Strait Undercover, Race Eberhardt plays Race Strait, a character based on his personality and his particular talents as an actor. Race Strait is a government agent for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) who makes an unexpected discovery that sends him down a path of adventure and danger.

Although Race has Down syndrome, during an interview with Today, Ben Gonyo noted, “For us, it was very important to not make the story about the disability.”

Strait Undercover is produced by Fish & Crown Creative. According to the movie’s official website, “Strait Undercover is a captivating feature film that breaks barriers and stereotypes.”

The picture was filmed throughout Rochester and includes choreographed fight sequences. Race relished learning how to become an action hero and performing stunts on set.

Recently, Race received recognition from the Rochester City Council for his starring role in Strait Undercover. He is also the subject of a documentary in development, titled Race to the Movies, that follows his journey.

For his groundbreaking performance, Race was invited to visit Today and featured in an article from People. Watch a memorable clip of his Today Show appearance:

Outside of his work as an actor, Race keeps busy with multiple side projects. He knits and sells scarves to raise money for charity. To date, he’s fundraised nearly $10,000!

For 15 years, Race has also served as a clerical assistant for Paychex, where he feels at home.

“I have so many friends there,” he said of his job.

Additionally, in his spare time, Race enjoys exercising, golfing, and volunteering as a greeter. He always makes the most of each day!

“I am so proud of him,” said Care Coordinator Kara Gleghorn, who through Person Centered Services connects Race to the care, support and opportunities that maximize his quality of life.

Kara has worked with Race for more than seven years. During their time together, she linked Race and his family to Self-Directed Services. This gave them the flexibility they needed to support Race’s dreams.

“Race is such an interesting guy and I love hearing his stories,” Kara said. “He’s determined, ambitious, and a hard worker.”

“Kara is great,” said Race, who is grateful to partner with his Care Coordinator. “She’s an outstanding person who makes sure to call me every month.”
