Care Coordinator Cassandra Pierson has been an incredible advocate for the teaching of American Sign Language (ASL) in schools!

Cassandra presented before the Board of Education in the Newark School District to highlight the advantages of making ASL an option for students to fulfill language learning requirements. She explained how ASL meets New York State Regents standards and provides numerous benefits. These include increased focus, attention, and memory for learners, as well as greater inclusivity and cultural awareness for people who are deaf or have hearing loss.

Because of Cassandra’s advocacy, the Newark School District is now offering the opportunity for students to take ASL classes in grades 9-12 through AccelerateU!

“ASL is a language that is readily used within our culture,” said Cassandra. “I encourage everyone to advocate to get ASL in schools. It has been an available option for 32 years!”

Since 2019, Cassandra has coordinated care for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities through Person Centered Services. She is inspired by the community she serves, and loves connecting people to the care, support, and opportunities they need to thrive.

“I like finding a way to meet people’s needs and desires in creative ways,” she said. “I’m ensuring the health, safety and happiness of those I work with.”

We’re so thankful for Cassandra’s advocacy, both on behalf of those she supports and within her community at large!
