SNAP Benefits During Government Shutdown
Those who receive SNAP could lose access to their benefits starting November 1, 2025.
As you may know, the current US government shutdown is causing uncertainty about federally funded Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits that many, including our members, rely on for food assistance. Those who receive SNAP could lose access to their benefits starting November 1.
You can also take action by sending a message to your representatives, asking them to fight to ensure that people don’t lose SNAP benefits. Reach out to your representative today!
Additional Information:
– Letters regarding this change are expected to be sent out to impacted individuals soon. Although we have not seen a copy of the letter, we anticipate it will explain options for meeting the so-called Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWDs) rule, mandating those ages 18–64 must document 80 hours/month of work, education, or volunteering to maintain SNAP benefits.
– For information on the federal government shutdown and November SNAP benefits, visit the NYS Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) SNAP Benefits FAQs page linked here.
– The Governor has launched a new website for New Yorkers to share their stories about the impact these cuts will have on their lives. She also held a press conference regarding the press conference on October 27, 2025, which can be viewed here.
– We understand there is also uncertainty about the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), which could possibly delay the program opening.
It is not known if this will happen or how long it may last, although Person Centered Services is now sharing information about food pantries and other resources available throughout our service area:
