James Embraces a New Life

For a long time, James lived in his parents’ home and relied on their support. He did not know what the next step in his life should be. James participated in Supported Employment services, but had yet to find a job that fit.

Care Coordinator Laurie Bush helped James pursue a more fulfilling and independent life. She transitioned him from agency services to self-direction, giving him more personal control. He was empowered to graduate from Supported Employment and soon found full-time work as a cleaner at a high school.

“Through his self-directed supports, James has been given the gift of freedom and a new outlook and direction for his future,” says Laurie.

After becoming self-directed and securing a job, James took the next big step in his life. With Laurie’s help, James left his long-time home with his parents to live in his own apartment. His family was very encouraging as he embraced this new opportunity.

“James has a great circle of support,” says Laurie. “They rallied around James and made the transition go as smooth as possible during the pandemic!”

James has made his new apartment his own, adding personal touches that reflect his values and beliefs. He sees wonderful possibilities in all areas of his life, and communicates with Laurie regularly about what his plans are. James hopes to eventually upgrade to a house and to move forward with his career path.

“In his short time of living on his own, James’s confidence level has increased,” says Laurie. “He is now excited to share his ideas, goals for the future, and his current accomplishments.”
