Jake Gets Behind the Wheel

Since Jake was a little boy, he enjoyed driving lawn mowers and anything that allowed him to get behind the wheel. As a child, he drove Power Wheels vehicles and even owned a gas-powered go-kart!

As soon as Jake turned 16, he went to the DMV and obtained his permit. After this step, Megan, a Care Coordinator at Person Centered Services, assisted him in scheduling a cognitive test he needed in order to drive. She was there with him during the test as support.

Following the evaluation, Jake was told he could not drive until at least the spring of 2020, when Rochester DriveOn could help accommodate him with a minivan that had adaptive features. In March, COVID-19 hit, which further delayed Jake’s opportunity to drive.

“Even though he was frustrated by all the barriers he faced, Jake never gave up hope and benefited from the support of his team,” says Megan.

On August 26, Jake was finally able to get behind the wheel of a minivan! He used his learner’s permit for the first time, fulfilling a major goal.

“It felt awesome,” Jake says. “I’m glad Megan helped get me into the Rochester DriveOn program.”

Megan has worked with Jake since 2013. Early on, she also helped Jake’s family advocate for Social Security benefits after being denied twice. Since then, they have relied on her for advocacy and clarity related to new opportunities. This year, Megan played a key role in helping Jake fulfill his dream of driving, supporting his goal each step of the way.

“I always take pleasure in seeing individuals succeed,” says Megan.

Jake looks forward to driving more in the days ahead. “If you have a goal, don’t give up!” he says, encouraging others to stay determined.
