Tips for Caregivers: Preparing for Seasonal Changes

As the temperatures get cooler and the sun sets earlier, changes in weather, daylight, clothing, activities, and daily environments can become challenging, especially for people with intellectual or developmental disabilities (I/DD) and their caregivers.

Person Centered Services has tips to help caregivers with the transition into fall:

Prepare for different weather conditions. Keep fall clothing accessible and introduce layers gradually so getting dressed stays comfortable and predictable.

Remember the changes to daylight. As the days get shorter, earlier sunsets can affect evening activities, routines, and energy levels. Caregivers are encouraged to talk about the changes and make adjustments to plans as needed.

Pay attention to needs. Changes in temperature, the elements, and different clothing textures can be uncomfortable for some people. Notice what works best for the person and adapt accordingly.

Plan for seasonal activities. Festivals, sporting events, outdoor activities and other events are a part of fall in any community. If possible, let the person know about and have a say in which activities they want to participate.

Be flexible and patient. Everyone adjusts to change differently. A little extra time, reassurance and flexibility can make seasonal transitions feel more comfortable.

Seasonal and environmental changes affect everyone differently, so it is important for caregivers to observe, listen and adapt to individual needs.
