Tips for Caregivers: Self-Care

The end of summer is a busy time as activities continue, and back-to-school or fall transitions are fast approaching. It’s a good idea to take a moment to evaluate your self-care routine or build a new one! Self-care is not a luxury; it helps people maintain their own well-being, preventing burn-out, and helping them continue to provide effective support.

At Person Centered Services, we want our members, caregivers, family members, and Care Coordinators to take time for self-care. Here are a few tips to get you started:

Keep a routine for yourself. While caregivers and Care Coordinators often focus on maintaining routines for those they support, having consistent sleep, meal, and activity schedules can help reduce stress and improve energy levels. Consistency is associated with better physical and emotional well-being.

Take short breaks. Even a quick 10 to 15 minutes of uninterrupted time can help you recharge. Build breaks into the day rather than waiting until stress becomes too much. Regular downtime supports resilience and helps prevent burnout.

Protect your sleep. Sleep is so important! Aim for consistent bedtimes and wake times whenever possible, as adequate sleep supports emotional regulation, concentration, and overall health.

Stay connected. Parents, caregivers, family members, and Care Coordinators benefit from sharing experiences and practical advice with colleagues, friends, family members, or support groups. Social connection can reduce feelings of isolation and provide emotional support.

Focus on healthy habits, not perfection. Regular meals, physical activity, hydration, and rest contribute to long-term well-being. Small, sustainable habits are often more effective than trying to make major lifestyle changes. Watch for signs of stress and always take time to celebrate small successes!
