Clinical Corner: LGBTQ+ Support
The Person Centered Services Clinical Corner offers helpful advice for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities from our Clinical Services team.
Clinical Services would like to highlight the resources below, which can support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as their supporters, with exploring sexual orientation, gender identity, and mental health:
– Organization for Autism Research (OAR) Guide:
The guide on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity offers evidence-based information that may be particularly helpful for individuals on the autism spectrum and those who support them.
– PFLAG:
PFLAG provides helpful education and support resources, especially for families and allies. Local chapters are available in Buffalo, Rochester, and the Chautauqua area, and the Buffalo chapter offers a parent helpline.
– Project SHINE:
A valuable resource tailored for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). It includes accessible, inclusive information—including a dedicated section on sexual orientation—that can support education and conversation.
– The Trevor Project:
A critical support resource for LGBTQ+ youth and young adults experiencing mental health challenges. Services include a 24/7 crisis program available via text, call, and web chat, as well as an online community for peer support.
These resources can support inclusive, informed, and compassionate care and conversations across the communities we serve.
